Kailey Webster is what the DAISY Award is all about. Her love for her patients is seen and felt by everyone in our unit. Kailey is a prime example of an all-around Pediatric nurse. Kailey has managed to perfect the balance of being a nurse and a friend for many of her patients.
For example, one of our patients, W, is held near and dear to her heart. W comes into the hospital quite frequently for long inpatient stays. Many times, due to him being a teenager, he is often alone during the day. He has a diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis and requires contact isolation with every visit. Kailey, even when she is not his direct nurse for the day, always tries to visit with him multiple times a day. She sits with him and talks about his fears of the unseen future of his illness and truthfully anything he wants to talk about. She makes the time that many nurses sometimes cannot seem to find throughout the day, due to our very busy schedules.
Many times, in her free time and on her breaks, Kailey is in W's room helping him with his newest puzzle. W is the puzzle master. He has been doing 1,000+ piece puzzles on our unit since he was a young child. Kailey will even bring him new puzzles from home and often helps him complete them. In addition, Kailey has been with W through a lot! As his illness progresses, every admission and discharge get a little bit harder for our staff. But Kailey always spends each of his admissions treating it as if it is the most important one.
This is probably why W loves her so much. He will call the charge nurse every shift and ask who his nurse will be. The answer is always Kailey! Kailey has never lost sight of why she chose this career path. Kailey was meant to be a nurse. She was meant to be a nurse for children. She displays a high quality of strength, patience, love, and passion for her patients. It is a bond that every pediatric nurse can learn from. I am proud to call Kailey my co-worker, my friend, and the nurse who inspires me most.
