On nights when Kaitlin was not assigned to care for my wife, she stopped by her room to say, “Hi” to us and asked how my wife was doing.
My wife had a cardiac event at home and was admitted to the Sky Ridge Emergency Room by ambulance. She was then transferred to the cardiovascular floor for observation and testing. B coded and found herself intubated in the ICU. Serval nurses took great care of B in the ICU, and each is worthy of a DAISY Nomination in his or her own right.
During my wife’s cardiac trauma is where we met an amazing ICU nurse. My wife coded again in the ICU and Kaitlin began urgent life-saving measures to resuscitate her. Thanks to this nurse's quick actions she ensured a team of doctors, nurses, and ancillary staff worked together to save my wife. This nurse called me at home in the middle of the night to relay my wife’s grave condition. Her bedside manner is comforting and professional. She communicates effectively. She has style and swagger. She is meticulous in detail, and advocates for her patients.
When this nurse heard our family referring to my wife as a particular nickname, she asked why we called her that name. One of our daughters, described the origin of the nickname. Even though my wife was in a medically induced coma, this nurse began using her nickname to make her feel “at home” and amongst friends. She made us feel like my wife was more like a family member to her than “just” a patient.
This nurse is compassionate. She blends this trait with the skill to be observant and thinks about what is happening around her. For instance, when my wife was fading in and out of consciousness, this nurse sensed she was in pain and needed assistance. She took charge quickly, spoke directly to my wife, and let her know she was going to help her. As a result of this nurse's actions, my wife was able to rest more peacefully. Yes, it is her job, however, it is reassuring to see this nurse's leadership skills in action. Our family appreciates this nurse so much. Family members know when a patient is loved because they see she is taken care of so selflessly and so well. That describes this nurse in a nutshell.
On nights when Kaitlin was not assigned to care for my wife, she stopped by her room to say, “Hi” to us and asked how my wife was doing. She is genuine and phenomenal at what she does. She never complained despite the stress of caring for a critically ill patient. Instead, she gave my wife her love, energy, and enthusiasm during a traumatic event for our family. We wish Katie only the best as she continues doing such incredible work for her patients at Sky Ridge. Our family thinks of Katie often. We want Katie to know her patients and their families feel safe and secure knowing Katie is managing the ICU room. In short, Katie is so very much appreciated, even if she does not hear it every day. Katie touches so many lives with her care, skill, quick thinking, and expertise. Thank you again, Katie, for taking such good care of my wife.
