Without her calm demeanor, her skill and knowledge, and her willingness to stay and help, I'm afraid this baby's outcome would have been severely compromised.
On an evening in July, we put out a request for help on the OB unit. We were short a nurse and needed help. Katie answered the call and said she could help us for part of the shift, as she had already worked her regular job from 7 am to 3 pm earlier that day. Around midnight, Katie was finishing her charting, and we were both preparing to leave for the night when I got word that a laboring patient was in trouble; the baby's heart rate had dropped, and if we couldn't get it back up, we were going to the OR for a STAT C-section.

Katie and I ran down the hallway to see how we could help. It was quickly evident that we had an emergency, and we were headed for the OR. Katie didn't hesitate to jump in and help. She had already been there past her regular shift, and now it was past her "extra" shift, but she was all in with us, doing what she could to help this patient and her unborn baby. We ended up in the OR until almost 4 am, working to save this baby. Katie's presence and help with this resuscitation made all the difference to the team that was working so hard to help this baby. Her calm presence and knowledge of NRP made her an invaluable member of the team.

She was instrumental in accomplishing a successful resuscitation and transfer of a very ill newborn. Without her calm demeanor, her skill and knowledge, and her willingness to stay and help, I'm afraid this baby's outcome would have been severely compromised. She went above and beyond, staying way past the end of her voluntary shift to do what she could, and then some, to help our team give this baby a chance to live.

Katie embodies the selflessness and grit that define a "remarkable" nurse! She's definitely one that you want with you when you're running into an emergent situation, and I'm so glad she was the one running with us that night.
