I’ve learned so much just by watching her lead with empathy, grace, and a genuine heart.
I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Ms. Kaitlyn Lezza, and I can say without a doubt that she is one of the most compassionate and emotionally intuitive nurses I’ve ever known. Her ability to see beyond the clinical needs of her patients and truly connect with them as human beings is nothing short of extraordinary. There are multiple instances that stay with me that truly display her compassion.
We had an elderly woman in June of 2025 who had a very complex medical history. She did not have visitors as her family was on vacation in Italy. You could just feel the sadness and loneliness hanging over her. Kaitlyn noticed it too, but instead of just acknowledging it or medicating it, she did something about it. She collaborated with our interdisciplinary team, ensured safety, and took the time out of her busy day to wheel the patient, in her bed, outside to enjoy the sun and fresh air. Watching the coordination of this moment and the smile and lighter spirit the patient had upon her return to the unit was honestly one of the most beautiful moments I’ve witnessed in my career.
Then, just a few days later, she found out it was another patient’s birthday. An elderly gentleman who had swallowing complications related to his medical conditions and so he had a feeding tube in place. He was a kind and quiet soul who had minimal visitors as well. On this particular shift, Kaitlyn found out it was his birthday. Most people wouldn’t have thought twice, but not Kaitlyn. She negotiated with the team to allow this man a small cookie crumb to celebrate, gathered the staff on the unit, and did a surprise celebration in which the entire unit sang happy birthday to him.
The patient was grateful for this simple gesture. It was such a simple gesture, but it meant everything. This is who Kaitlyn is. She doesn't just treat patients, she sees them. She listens to what isn’t said. She brings comfort in the most human ways, and she reminds all of us why we chose this profession in the first place. She brings light and warmth into the hardest days, not just for her patients, but for her coworkers, too. I’ve learned so much just by watching her lead with empathy, grace, and a genuine heart. Through rough and tough times, Kaitlyn still possesses the heart of nursing, which is truly becoming a rarity these days. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the DAISY Award.
