Throughout our stay at the NICU, Kala would come in to check on us on her off days, she’d come in when she was teaching classes at the hospital, she’d take pictures of S and make scrapbook pages for him.
Our journey began when we welcomed our twin boys at just 22 weeks. This unexpected moment happened, and there my husband and I were, in complete shock and disbelief. At this time, when we, as parents, couldn’t jump in to rescue our babies, there stood Kala. She came off the plane with the Fargo Med team, and the second her feet hit that room, she got to work. I knew at that point that our babies were getting the best care. After the loss of our baby B and an extremely long night, we walked into S’s room the next day, and there Kala was again. Sitting on a chair admiring our little guy. That day, we learned that she picked up an extra shift to be with S and us. She spoke with us, and we all got to know each other.
Throughout our stay at the NICU, Kala would come in to check on us on her off days, she’d come in when she was teaching classes at the hospital, she’d take pictures of S and make scrapbook pages for him. She did the absolute most. On the last day with our baby S, Kala was there. We are so thankful that we had her on the first and last day, as well as all the days in between. Kala let us stay at the hospital holding our baby as long as we wanted. She cared for him and mourned him right by our sides. On the day of S’s burial, three hours away from Fargo, Kala joined us in celebrating S’s life. Since then, Kala has continued to be present in our lives, checking in on my husband and I, and being more than just S’s nurse; more like a friend. We don’t know God’s plan or why we had to go through the difficulties that we did. But I like to believe that S and B brought us Kala. She is a role model and someone that I look up to. The moral of my story is that everyone should strive to be like Kala. I wish everyone got to have her in their life.
