Throughout my 8-week preceptorship of Kaleigh, I have watched her grow as a student nurse, a patient advocate and new nurse. She shows compassion to not only the patients, but the patient's family as well by anticipating their needs as well as taking the time to ask if she can do anything to help make them more comfortable with their stay. She has asked appropriate questions in order to better understand the care we are providing to our patients. One patient in particular really sticks out when thinking about the compassion Kaleigh exudes. This patient had a very involved ENT surgery and was having a lot of anxiety post procedure. Kaleigh took the time to ask the patient about things that she liked, listened to her concerns, sat with the patient and talked to her while holding her hand until the patient was more comfortable and was able to fall asleep. I also watched Kaleigh assist the patient fix her hair so the patient was more comfortable, wash her face and help the patient with as much as a "normal" routine as we could offer the patient. She also brought pictures of her animals to share with the patient, because through having a long conversation with the patient, she found out how much the patient enjoyed animals. The way the patient's face lit up with joy while looking through pictures and when Kaleigh and I walked into the room really reminded me of why I chose nursing in the first place. The patient trusted myself and Kaleigh so much and I appreciate Kaleigh's efforts to build a great rapport with our patients. This is just one example of the care I have got to witness Kaleigh provide over her 8-week capstone experience with me, and I feel our unit is gaining an excellent team member post graduation with Kaleigh Pack.
