Infusion had a patient that needed to have frequent magnesium infusions. The patient would receive her infusion over several hours, multiple times a week. Despite the frequent infusions, her magnesium level continued to be low, and even critical. The dose of magnesium was increased and eventually the patient was able to maintain a magnesium level just above critical, but never normal. This continued for about a year. Recently, this patient had become hospitalized. The inpatient nurses were able to administer her magnesium infusions over a longer period of time. When the patient was discharged from the hospital, her magnesium level was normal. Kaley Miller recognized that when the patient came the next day for her magnesium infusion that the patient had more energy and was able to have a better quality of life. Kaley started researching magnesium infusions for patients who have chronically low levels. Through her research, Kaley found that if the magnesium was infused over 12-24 hours that it may be absorbed better. Kaley coordinated with the pharmacy, the patient's primary care physician and the patient's family to set up a home infusion pump for the magnesium to infuse over 24 hours. The patient had a great response to the change in administration time. Her magnesium levels were rising and even normal! The patient and her family members were so excited to see the levels within normal range. This patient is able to spend more time with family, less time at the hospital and overall have a better quality of life because of Kaley's hard work and dedication.
