Kali came in that Sunday morning and just watching her get the report I knew that we were in great hands.
Kali was the nurse taking care of my sister on the day my niece gained her heavenly birthday. It had been a long weekend of inducing labor but, instead of a happy moment, in the end we were preparing to say goodbye. My sister and I, mom, and brother-in-law were all physically, mentally, and emotionally spent. Kali came in that Sunday morning and just watching her get the report I knew that we were in great hands. She was so sure of herself and looked at my sister like “I got you” and that is exactly what my sister needed. She asked her questions and you could tell she was really listening.
That morning we were so frustrated with no changes in her cervix and the doctor left us unsure of the next step after morning rounds. I remember finally asking Kali in pure frustration and almost in tears, “What are we going to do? What’s next?” I didn’t expect Kali to answer but she validated our concerns and told us to sit together and have a moment to express our frustrations and to hit the call light when we were ready. When she came back she had the doctor and we had a plan. I am a nurse and I truly felt Kali took that time to advocate for us when we felt helplessly out of control.
As we took the next steps in the induction process there was a lull and for the first time in 48 hours I felt ok to leave; Kali caught me in the hallway and asked me how I was doing! It took a minute out of her time but it meant the world. Over those 12 hours, Kali had multiple intimate moments with my sister and brother-in-law. They talked about what it will be like to see my niece and how they would handle that. She didn’t say it all at once though. She would talk a little bit then go back to the computer and chart, giving my sister time to process, then she would bring up the next piece. Nothing seemed to go “as planned” for this experience for my sister and brother-in-law but Kali was the most stable person to have beside us.
When we had to decide whether to go to surgery or not, Kali was there to listen and before my sister left, not knowing if she would be back before she got off work, she hugged her and locked eyes with her, and said “you take care of yourself and get help after this, ok?” Kali and my sister just had this moment and the room was quiet. Many times throughout the day we had expressed to Kali privately how worried we were about how my sister would recover from this and Kali made sure my sister knew she needed to reach out for help. Once my sister was taken to surgery, Kali stayed in the room with my mom and I busying herself cleaning up the room but staying present even though my sister wasn’t even in there anymore. Then she spent more time giving us the resources needed to take steps in making sure my sister would get help.
Nurses are always busy and have so much to accomplish in 12 hours but, always made us feel like she had the time. She made my sister feel safe, loved, and cared for. I could not have asked for a better nurse to be with my sister that day. Thank you Kali for all you do and the love and dedication, you provided my sister and family that day!
