Kali, with her confident, caring, compassionate voice, could get him to do what needed to be done willingly.
My 23-year-old son was admitted to the 5100 nurses station at AG after many days in the ICU in Canton & Akron. He was in a severe car accident where he was hit by a drunk driver. My son, among other things, is suffering from a severe traumatic brain injury.
Kali went above and beyond in taking care of my son. With her kindness and compassion, he was able to trust her completely. There were days when he refused to eat. This nominee, using the food I would bring from home, would reheat it and sit with him while he ate. She made him special desserts from items they had on the floor. She wrote him inspirational messages on his board. She was able to talk him down from his agitation. She could get him to shower, use the restroom, and get him to take his much-needed medication. She took him for walks in his walker or rides in his wheelchair. She asked him about his interests and printed pages of those images for him to look at. As well as talk to him about them every time she encountered him.
She spent time getting to know him. She earned his trust. She had hope and faith in him, and it showed in the way she talked to him, spent time with him, and cared for him. She saw my son for the kind, wonderful soul he is and not the person the TBI changed him into. She cared about my son. And it showed every time she entered the room or answered my never-ending phone calls to her.
There were days when not even I could get him to do simple tasks. Kali, with her confident, caring, compassionate voice, could get him to do what needed to be done willingly. My son has a hard time remembering things, and although he may not have recognized her from shift to shift, it was obvious he knew that she was a familiar, safe presence. She is beyond amazing. She is a phenomenal nurse you don't come across every day. She loves her job. She loves her patients, and she puts all her love and compassion into them. I always felt comfort knowing my son was in this nominee’s care. I knew he was happy. I knew he was calm or could be calmed by her, and I knew he was in good hands.
The entire staff on the 5100 floor is amazing, but none of them are like this nominee. Kali is an angel on earth, and I will be grateful for her for the rest of my life. I do believe she has so much more to do with his rapid, ever-growing recovery than we will ever know. Never underestimate the healing power of a smile, of compassion, of kindness and of faith and trust in one’s ability. She had all of those things every time she encountered my son, and he thrived because of it.
