Kam cared for a nursing home patient who needed two units of blood. The patient was sent into the unit early in the morning and was scheduled to be there for seven hours. The patient was not able to walk very well and required two people to assist her to the bathroom. The patient was receiving large amounts of fluid and medication which caused her to go to the rest room frequently. Kam made sure to ask the patient very frequently if she needed to go to the restroom and help her each time even though she was caring for 8-9 other patients throughout the day. A family member came to sit with the patient some of the time and it was determined by the family and Kam that the patient had left her home so early she had not even had time to eat breakfast. The patient was on a mechanical soft diet and nothing was sent with her. Kam keep asking the patient if she wanted lunch and the patient insisted she was okay. It started to get later in the afternoon and Kam insisted the patient eat something. The patient finally stated she was in fact hungry. Unfortunately there were no lunch items or appropriate snacks for a mechanical soft diet in this outpatient unit. Kam innovated and called ABBCI to get some ice cream. She also suggested we take a turkey sandwich, chop it up real fine, and mix it with some mayo until it was soft enough and safe enough to eat. The patient, family and Kam agreed this would be a safe idea and an excellent way to get this patient something to eat after 6 hours with nothing to eat. Kam was busy, but she took the time to chop the meat up herself, mix it with the mayo, make sure it was safe, and then feed the patient. She focused all her time and energy into making this a great experience for this patient even though she was very busy. She delegated any other critical tasks to others on the unit so this patient could get some nourishment on what was a very long day for her in an outpatient healthcare setting. While feeding the patient, Kam took the time to ask about her and ask about her family. The family member talked with them too. When the patient and family left for the day, they thanked Kam over and over for her excellent care and for taking the time to listen and to give her nourishment.
