She showed the caliber of what a nurse is, rushing toward a crisis versus running away.
Three deliveries, two stat C sections, and two outbound neonatal transports. Truly the definition of a busy shift in the Family Birthing Center, let alone for a weekend night shift. For those nurses scheduled that night, their skills were tested, their trust in their colleagues confirmed, and the culture of their tribe (in this case the FBC) was validated. It was all hands on deck. The night house sup came to FBC to man the desk, answering call lights as the FBC team was catching babies in both the FBC OR and the Main OR. A resource nurse worked PEDS, so another FBC nurse could be freed up to care for the newborns. Respiratory therapists worked beyond their comfort zone. An ED monitor tech came to help coordinate the two outbound neonatal transports (2 of the 3 babies born needed a higher level of care). Yet more help was needed. The leader on call rushed in. When help comes from the unexpected, that is easily seen as miraculous. Kami Hoffheins (FBC Core nurse) is that miracle. It was a Sunday night, nearing midnight. Kami was not scheduled. But she picked up the call from the night FBC charge nurse. No hesitation. She came into the chaos willingly.

Kami came in. She delivered care as expected and as she has been trained. But she also brought what defines her everyday practice of kindness, integrity, and respect. In addition, her dedication to her patients and to her team members is why she stands out in this field of DAISYs. She showed the caliber of what a nurse is, rushing toward a crisis versus running away. All nurses strive to be what Kami already is: BRAVERY with COMPASSION. She is a true DAISY.
