My daughter was born at 8:53 pm and she and my husband were almost instantly swept off to the NICU until the late hours of the night/morning. It had been a long day, and even with the great help and support we had throughout the process, it was one of the most stressful days of our lives. By the time A and my husband got back to the mother/baby room, we were exhausted. We'd been up since 4 am with adrenaline pumping all day long. We were excited to start our lives with A, but also super stressed out about the little things - will I be able to feed successfully? How do I swaddle her now that she's wiggling this much? How do we handle her IV? Kandace was there to save the day and had a huge impact on us being able to start up successfully as parents. She truly cared about our whole family and went above and beyond in every interaction with us. Sometimes it's easy to feel really bad having to call in a nurse, particularly in the middle of the night, but Kandace worked hard to make sure we were comfortable and made sure we knew that when was there and wanted to help us. Kandace was super helpful with the basics, but more importantly, took extra time to help us understand why she was doing the things she did. From tips to getting A to feed (that still save the day today) to more effective swaddling, to patiently waiting while my husband was terribly clumsy at changing diapers, she supported us and helped talk us through great ways of doing things. In everything that she did, as we were stressed out beyond belief, Kandace brought a sense of care, peace, and practicality that gave us the support structure to feel like we "had it" as parents. Her passion for helping people was clear, and we were so lucky to get to know her.
