The fact that Kannika remembered so much about my wife's history and our names spoke volumes to us.
I've actually been meaning to nominate Kannika since my first experience with her, and for multiple reasons. so you can consider this a triple nomination.
About 2 years ago when my wife (who has chronic health problems) got transferred to the ICU Kannika really made a good impression on us because she not only listened to us, but she HEARD what we had to say. She was kind and caring when needed, but also spunky and funny when we all needed a laugh. I mentioned that one of my wife's home meds was too expensive for us and she spoke to the doctor and suggested a cheaper alternative that we could try while under her watchful eye. And I'm not joking about the watchful eye. She knew our every movement even when she wasn't anywhere near the room. I always joked that she has "ESPN". We were home within a week on new meds that we could actually afford.
This last fall my wife was in the ICU again, this time on life support and who do you think welcomed us again? Kannika didn't even miss a beat. She welcomed us and remembered not only my name but called my wife by the nickname I gave her. The fact that she remembered so much about my wife's history and our names spoke volumes to us. She was the charge nurse that night, but it did not mean she wasn't present every step of the way. I wanted to stay with my wife overnight as I always do but because of covid, I couldn't. I found so much comfort knowing that our little ninja angel was there watching over her.
Last but not least. I was in Nam and it was the darkest time in my life. Something that has haunted me all these years. Somehow that came up in conversation and I told her that I still struggle with it. Her exact words to me were, "Thank you. Had you not been fighting that war, I would not be here taking care of your wife today. My family came here as refugees after that war." Now, this old man has found some peace knowing that there was some good that came out of those dark days, and her name is Kannika.
