When my 81 year old grandmother broke her hip Christmas Eve, it made for quite a sudden stressful Christmas for our family. She had to have immediate surgery on Christmas Eve day, early in the am. This time last year was also quite difficult. We lost my grandfather to cancer in November. My grandparent's anniversary is on December 28th. She came to visit us all for Christmas and ended up at the hospital. The morning of her surgery, I arrived with a picture of her and my grandfather to carry into surgery. She wasn't able to wear the silver necklace with his fingerprint. While Nurse Kara prepped her for surgery, she exhibited a very simple act that transcended into something compassionate for us both. Kara took the time to tape the picture to her gown over her heart. We thanked her. Her response was "This is just as important as everything else". Days later, we remain forever grateful.
