Kara is an exceptional nurse who puts not only her patients but also her coworkers first. We lost one of our long-term babies pretty suddenly one shift, and she came in early to be with this patient's family to provide them with photos and keepsakes, as well as assist them in postmortem care. During this infant's entire NICU stay, Kara was pretty much her primary nurse. She always gave this baby the very best care, always provided the baby's parents with updates and photos throughout her shift, and always treated her as if she were her own. I just know she was able to give that family just a little bit of peace when she was caring for her. Those photos and keepsakes that Kara was always so proactive about getting were all that the family had to show at her funeral. I know how thankful they are to be able to hold on to those forever.

Lastly, she is the co-chair of our bereavement committee, so while navigating this patient's death on her own she was also checking in with her coworkers to make sure they were okay. She continues to provide our team with different ways to cope with the infant loss we see on our unit and helps our families find even the smallest bit of peace during their worst moments.
