The next day, even though she had a different assignment, Kara asked about my care & showed interest in telling me what to anticipate with discharge & then followed up to ensure all was done.
Kara is the perfectly balanced Nurse. Exceptional at nursing process (Excellence). Kara is adept at whole assessment before planning. Kara asked me questions first to determine my priorities for care. She is great at mutual goal setting. She showed great respect for my right of self-determination. In short, I was, and felt empowered (Dignity). Kara was 100% present for the person she was caring for at that moment. She is very personable (Dignity & Excellence). Kara explained medications and was accurate and complete, with urgency – for example, she cleared my inhaler & eye drops, and kept all on schedule (Excellence).

Kara explained what she would do after discussing plan of care & then followed up on all items (Integrity & Excellence). Kara remembered details of the care plan and was diligent in completing them (Excellence). Kara balanced the issue of safety, while promoting my independence in getting back and forth to the bathroom and caring for myself. That is not easy to get right, but critical for my well-being (Dignity & Compassion). Kara was efficient in her care; she did not need to spend a great deal of time with me, but her time with me was focused and intentional. Quality over quantity. Day shift can be very busy. Kara met the needs of the day, but never vented or complained to me, which unfortunately is common (Justice, Integrity, & Excellence).

Kara kept the conversation and environment of care positive and focused on my recovery & wellness (Integrity). She is even-keeled and manages stress well. Kara showed me she washed her hands & reliably had me wear my mask when away from my bed (Justice & Integrity). Kara incorporated Bill, my care support person, very well into our healthcare team with ways he could participate, how he could monitor with regular communication. She is friendly with cheer and a good sense of humor. The next day, even though she had a different assignment, Kara asked about my care & showed interest in telling me what to anticipate with discharge & then followed up to ensure all was done. Kara treated me just like family! Thank you Kara & Thank you Providence!

This is Kara's second DAISY Award!
