I was moved by the story of the DAISY Award and the extraordinary way a family chose to thank nurses. As I read about the care Patrick Barnes received by nurses, I thought about Kara and the tender nursing she gave to my mother. All of the nurses have been wonderful and very professional, but Kara stood out as someone with the "gift" of nursing. My mother is 95 years old, frail, and confused after surgery and Kara was so understanding, gentle in all her administrations, and caring for my mother's mind as well as body. Kara always ensured my mother was aware of what would be done and kept checking with her to see if she was in pain or if it was alright to continue.
Kara was so skilled and alert to any possible problems during my mother's early recovery from surgery to fix her broken femur. Kara was checking things I never would have thought of; all coming together as a complete care package suited just for my mother. I feel Kara's nursing (personal skill, caring, and feeling) for my mother was significant at the right time to hasten my mother's recovery.

Thank you, Kara, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
