My 9 month old son J was admitted to KCH for ITP and respiratory virus. Kara was our night shift nurse that night. The plan was to give him Benadryl and Tylenol then after a few minutes start the IVIG medication. She did this and returned every fifteen minutes to take his vitals, check his temperature and turn up the IVIG. Things were running smoothly and after the 3rd or 4th adjustment he was asleep and appeared fairly comfortable so I decided to lie down and turn off the television to also get some rest. I laid there for a few minutes and just as I started to dose off I heard J breathing very fast and hard so I jumped up to check on him. He was lying almost on his side but his face was buried into the bed and his body was shaking. I immediately hit the call button and Kara and three other nurses rushed in. Kara took charge and turned off the drip and they began hooking up heart monitors. This was honestly the scariest moment of my life and Kara not only took care of my son but reassured me. The entire time she was there she was compassionate. She cared about my son and his wellbeing. She was confident which eased my worries that she knew what she was doing and very on top of things. Being in a hospital, although necessary, isn't very comfortable but she made us as comfortable as possible. I would trust my son's care to her any day and would highly recommend KCH as an all-around great hospital.
