August 2018 Honoree
kara tompkins, RN, MN
One day (before MARTI was prevalent), Kara was completing a utilization review on a patient who was LOS Day 2; relying on her school-age son to interpret Spanish to English when Kara noted there was no interpreter phone. Kara searched until she found one then spent over an hour assessing the patient's education and discharge needs, explaining meds and POC; then advocating the patient's questions, concerns, and wishes to the care team. Kara persevered despite multiple disconnections, having to restart the interpreter calls. This is advocacy at its best.
Also, despite facing personal loss and a year of change and transition, Kara brings a cheerful attitude to St. Clare on a daily basis, advocates for her patients, provides kudos for others and is a total team player who truly "plays like a champion" every day.

Thank you, Kara, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
