My dad was admitted after spending hours in the ER. Dad was sent to ER from a memory support unit at Garden Spot Village when he became unconscious at the breakfast table. On admission, Dad was pleasantly confused. Nurse Kara came into our room, introduced herself, pulled a chair right up beside him, spoke in the kindest, most gentle and caring voice and Dad immediately related and felt secure. It was obvious to me that Kara understood dementia. Before Kara left the room each time (and that was often), she made sure my dad was comfortable, safe, and the call bell in reach. She made sure Dad had water and always asked him if he needed anything. The thorough, detailed report she gave to the new nurse at shift change was unbelievable, impressive! There was not a detail missed.
May Kara be encouraged to continue to make a difference in the lives entrusted to her care. Kara owns excellence, not only by her warmth, caring bedside manner, and nursing skills but her intellect and knowledge related to my dad's medical diagnosis and past history. I am in amazement between the efficient communication between Kara and the Nurse Practitioner. Kara was not only gentle and kind to my dad, but she understood dementia. She displayed so much patience, gave my dad time to talk, and gave him time to finish his thoughts (even if not related to the conversation).
Kara also excelled in acknowledging my presence. She respected me, my insights, and included me with knowledge of tests, communication with doctors, and plan of care. Kara not only put my dad at ease but also myself; she brought peace to a fearful journey. It was the "little things" that brought joy. The dimming of lights, eye to eye contact with dad, joking with Dad, never missed a small gesture of enabling Dad to be comfortable before she left the room. She was there with extra pillows, drink of water, remote in place and educating how to call for help over and over. Because of Dad's superb care, I was able to leave the unit for a break and get something to eat. What a blessing for Dad and myself to meet someone of such excellence in the healthcare field.
