August 2024 Honoree
Karen Blackstock 2, ADN
When I came to the ER and was transferred to overnight observation, the idea of adding a new medication to my regime was discussed. I expressed my concerns and refusal to two different physicians (hospital and specialty) based on past experience with the medication and its side effects. The next day, Karen Blackstock came in with the medication that I had already talked with the doctors about the previous day. The specialty team did not round with me that morning and instead talked with the hospital physician and decided to go ahead with prescribing the new medication. Karen demonstrated critical thinking and incredible patient advocacy during that time. She brought the medication and came into the room, having already considered how the plan of care formulated by the doctors was not best suited for me and my situation. My nurse came and talked with me about the side effects, my previous experience with the medication, and her own concerns. After demonstrating therapeutic and active listening, she reported that she would advocate on my behalf to the doctors and try to have them come and talk with me. She was wonderful to have on my side through this frustrating process.
