Karen is always willing to step into emergent clinical situations. There was a difficult patient experience in the PACU. A female patient, with no history of seizure activity, began having seizures post-operatively. On this particular day, staffing was tight and there were many newer colleagues working. Karen went to assess the situation as the Total Quality Manager and immediately stepped in and began providing one-on-one care to this patient. Her doing this allowed the nurses to focus on the other patients who were rapidly coming to PACU from the OR. The husband of this patient was overwhelmed and very anxious as this was a planned outpatient surgery. He had numerous things to handle at home as the patient was in process of being transferred to MCSA for further evaluation. The husband realized his cell phone was very low on battery charge and he was concerned at how he would be able to make all the necessary phone calls and arrangements that needed to be made. As soon as the patient was stable, and a PACU RN could step in for a minute, Karen went to our gift shop and bought him a phone charger so that he would not need to worry. In addition, the husband, being overwhelmed, had difficulty understanding everything that was happening with his wife and what it all meant. Karen brought him back to the PACU from the waiting room as soon as the patient was stable enough for him to be present. She explained everything that was going and answered many questions. Once the EMS arrived Karen took additional time to explain exactly where his wife could be located. The care Karen provided this patient was superb but the most meaningful part of her care surrounded the husband who was lost and anxious. When she told me she bought him the phone charger I was moved that she would take the time to provide something that was so important to this man at this time.
