Karen immediately received the number for the other hospital and began the process of getting the patient accepted there.
On Tuesday I received a call from Cath lab because there was a patient receiving a TIPS procedure that needed to be transferred out to a higher level of care, and they were unsure what paperwork to fill out as well as how to fill the paperwork out. Karen heard that I was heading over there to help and also came over to the Cath lab to help.

While over in the Cath lab, we learned that the patient had been accepted at the University of Chicago and the IR provider wanted to ride in the helicopter with the patient. Karen immediately called the University of Chicago to check on whether or not this would be possible. While on the phone, it was determined that the provider wanted the patient to go to a different hospital. Karen immediately received the number for the other hospital and began the process of getting the patient accepted there.

While in the process of getting the patient accepted at this other facility, plans changed again, and the decision was made to get the patent to the University of Chicago. As soon as this happened, Karen started the process of getting the patient to the University of Chicago. Unfortunately, the patient was initially denied transfer to the University of Chicago due to insurance issues, but the case was being brought further to the administrators at the University of Chicago.

At this point, the IR provider was very upset and worried about this patient. By this point, it was time for Karen to leave for the day, but she did not leave. Karen instead decided to stay here with the IR provider in her office until we received the acceptance to the University of Chicago. Karen was here until 5:30 pm. She not only went above and beyond for this patient, but she also went above and beyond for the IR provider, Karen offered her a safe place to let her have anxiety and worry without fear of judgment.

Karen is an amazing nurse and case manager. She always goes above and beyond for all the patients in the ICU. Karen also remains calm under pressure and flexible when things change. She can always be counted on to do what is right and best for our patients.

Note: This is Karen's 2nd DAISY Award!
