Karen made a way to calm my grandmother down but at the same time showed me she deserves the same care everyone else gets.
Karen (KC) was one of the nurses who took care of my grandmother while she was in the emergency room. My grandmother has dementia and she also suffers from sundowners bad. Some people get frustrated when they care for a demented patient but not Karen. Karen made sure my grandma knew where she was even if she reminded her 30 times an hour. My grandmother got really ugly towards her but Karen didn’t let it phase her and took time to distract my grandmother and get her busy doing something. Karen asked why my grandmother was upset and my grandmother told her she had to get home to her children and do their laundry for school. Karen then gave my grandma a lot of dry cloths and asked my grandma to help fold them with her. My grandma thought she was folding clothes and this occupied her and got her to calm down. Once my grandmother calmed down, she was able to sit and talk to us and able to get her tests done. Not only did Karen take time to calm my grandmother down she also helped me. I was upset because my grandmother didn’t recognize me but Karen reassured me that this is normal behavior and can happen from time to time with my grandma’s diagnosis. Karen made a way to calm my grandmother down but at the same time showed me she deserves the same care everyone else gets. Karen had the patience to go out of her way to assure me and my grandmother she was getting taken care of. I will take some of these skills and use them and come up with creative ways to help calm my grandmother’s sun-downing behaviors down after watching Karen take a few extra seconds to do so. Thank you, Karen, you are a WONDERFUL, CARING, COMPASSIONATE nurse and everyone deserves to be treated the way you treat your patients.
