I just want to take a minute to express our family’s sincere thanks and appreciation for the kindness, gentleness and understanding exhibited by Karen, RN in oncology infusion in caring for my mother over the past few weeks. My 88-year-old Mom was quite recently diagnosed with rapidly progressive crescentic glomerulonephritis, requiring her to have a steroid pulse to induce immunosuppression. Karen administered each dose of Solumedrol and developed a warm rapport with my mom, listening to her stories and her hopes for good recovery while providing good guidance and teaching her about what to expect and how to care for herself. When my mom went into rapid a-fib with her first dose of steroids Karen calmly completed the infusion and wheeled her over to the ED for treatment afterward (the ED folks were also really great, by the way). Unfortunately, after her Rituximab dose a week or so later she developed septic shock and had a several-day-long ICU stay at St. Joe’s to treat that. (they were also great) When Mom recovered enough to discharge from the hospital, (weaker and shakier, but still determined to recover), Karen was available over the weekend to start her on 9 additional days of IV antibiotics. I can’t tell you what a comfort it was to my mom to see Karen’s face every day this past week. Regardless of how busy her day was, she always made Mom feel seen and cared for. She was everything we could have hoped for from a nurse-genuinely kind and fully present with all her knowledge and expertise to keep her patient safe. Honestly, Karen made me proud to be a nurse. She was just wonderful, and I want you to know that. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
