I would like to recognize Karen Long RN in Same Day surgery for helping one of her patients today. A patient came in for surgery to have a toe amputated. During his pre-op assessment, Karen discovered that the pain he was feeling was not related to his foot. He complained about pain in his right arm. His right arm was examined and appeared swollen, hard to touch with bruising from his forearm up to the shoulder. Karen alerted the doctors and the charge nurse because compartment syndrome was suspected. Due to the severity of the situation, a vascular surgeon was immediately consulted. The doctor evaluated the patient and scheduled surgery to save this man's arm. Karen's ability to recognize and assess the serious condition and intervention made a huge difference and saved his arm. All of the nurses and doctors commended Karen for her actions. Karen is one of our best nurses.
