It is my pleasure to nominate Karen for The DAISY Award. Recently Karen was called up to the front by a PAS team member to please assist a patient that had a fall. When she arrived to the bathroom where the reported patient was located, she promptly discovered that the patient was unconscious and in distress form an apparent overdose (due to the drug paraphernalia including sharps present). Karen was alone and it was lunch time, but she did not think twice and ran to find another nurse to go and assist the patient as she grabbed Narcan and more resources to help the patient in distress. Karen then made sure that the patient got Narcan and helped direct care without judgment, with respect and compassion. Although many people were involved with the patient's care, I am sure that it was Karen's quick thinking and compassionate heart that gave the patient the best chance at survival. The patient was breathing and waking up as EMS transferred her out of the unit. This was a rough day for everyone, but specifically for Karen and the other nurse who found the patient down in respiratory distress and surrounded by drug paraphernalia and sharps. This was a hard scene to take in and jump into action, but she went on with her day, helping other patients that needed her with the same dedication and compassion. Thank you, Karen for your life saving dedication. You are INCREDIBLE!!
