She is relentless and tenacious in getting what she believes is necessary for her patient’s wellbeing.
I am happy to recognize and nominate my co-worker Karen Moore for the DAISY Award. Karen has been a part of the Tampa General family for over three decades and works on 3K in the Cardiovascular Center Pre/Procedure area. Karen is exacting and thorough in her delivery of care, while following the processes of our unit and organization. While that in and of itself is noteworthy, what has most impressed me about Karen is her genuine concern and caring attitude towards our patients. She is relentless and tenacious in getting what she believes is necessary for her patient’s wellbeing. I have seen that make a huge difference in positive outcomes for our patients. Recently, Karen had a patient come in for a cardioversion due to atrial fibrillation. In this case the cardioversion is all that was ordered as it was unusual not to have a Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) first to confirm the absence of blood clots. Karen called the department and spoke to one of the nurses who basically dismissed her concern and said, “ Well that’s what the doctor ordered, so it must be ok” and proceeded with her pre-procedure admission process. That did not sit well with Karen, so she called the department again with the same concerns and once again was told not to worry about it. Karen was frustrated at this point and began the arduous task of tracking down the physician. He agreed with her immediately and had her add the TEE to the consent. Later in the day, the physician came up to the floor asking for the nurse he spoke to and I directed him to Karen. He thanked her for all her efforts and said that he really appreciated her. I was truly impressed with Karen and I hope that she is recognized for the excellent nurse and person that she is.
