At Cape Fear Valley, the epicenter of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and amidst a schedule that demands everything of a person, a Registered Nurse named Karen chose to do more than just monitor vitals. She chose to see the person behind the patient.

On days when the floor was at its loudest and the clock was most demanding, Karen did not simply set down a tray and move to the next room. She actually pulled up a chair and, with a steady hand and her calming presence, she personally fed my mother. In those moments, she wasn’t just providing nutrition; she was providing dignity.
