Karen was my and my son's nurse during delivery. She was very efficient and comforting during pre-op. But, that's not the extent of her extraordinary measures. My son was born with two heart defects, requiring immediate attention by Karen and the folks at NICU. Within 11 hours of birth, he was life-flighted to Nicklaus in Miami. Karen made sure, without being asked, that we got to see my son in NICU. I was still bed bound and immobile due to my cesarean section. This part, the unasked advocacy for her patient and for her extraordinary sympathy for our situation is why she is a DAISY Nurse. After my son was medi vac'd, she checked on me at the start and completion of her shifts, even though I was in postpartum and no longer in her unit. Her kindness meant a lot to me as I was on my own for recovery since my husband immediately went to Miami to accompany our son. This woman WAS my comfort during this dark time and I am indebted to her gracious actions as she exemplifies the spirit of nursing.
