April 2026 Honoree
Karen Senatore 2, RN, CN-BI
To provide some context, my family has a history of breast cancer. My mother had a lumpectomy two years ago, and both my great-grandmother and great-aunt underwent mastectomies. So, to be called back for a diagnostic mammogram after a routine screening, and then to be told I needed biopsies on both breasts, was, to put it mildly, terrifying. The weight of my family’s history pressed down on me, and I walked into my appointment feeling an immense sense of dread and isolation.
During my biopsies, I was cared for by a nurse named Karen Senatore. In the midst of one of the most vulnerable and frightening moments of my life, Karen was nothing short of an angel. While I tried to maintain a brave face, my fear must have been palpable. With the gentlest and most intuitive compassion, Karen seemed to understand everything I was feeling without me having to say a word. She never once left my side. She patiently walked me through every step of the procedure, and her calm guidance clarified the process and brought me a much-needed sense of peace. She held my hand, offering gentle pats and reassuring touches that grounded me in a way I so desperately needed. In that room, feeling so utterly alone with my deepest fears, her presence was a lifeline. It was the most profound display of human kindness I have ever experienced.
While every single member of the team was kind, helpful, and professional, Karen’s unwavering support was a gift. She was the calm in my storm, the quiet strength I needed to get through the day. These have been incredibly difficult weeks, but the memory of the care I received from Karen and the entire team has been a source of comfort and light. I am truly and deeply grateful. Karen was amazing, and her compassionate care was exactly what I needed at that moment. I want to ensure she is recognized for the incredible difference she makes in her patients' lives.
