Karen was in triage when a patient presented unexpectedly for care. The patient had multiple complications that challenged a normal progression of pregnancy. Karen provided thorough care and more importantly kept the patient informed at every new turn in the plan of care and established a trusting rapport. This same patient was later scheduled for a surgical procedure on a day when census was anticipated to be high. Karen saw this patient would be in need of monitoring before and during her procedure and volunteered to assist the team on her day off. Karen came in to monitor preoperatively and during the procedure, however the patient then required transportation to Women and Babies Hospital from LGH for admission due to complications. Karen once again committed to the importance of continuity of care volunteered to stay with the patient for what ended up being an entire shift. Karen exhibited her commitment not only to our patients, but also to the teamwork essential to provide the high quality care LGH is associated with.
