She listened to my answers with an unbiased view, and though it was easy to see that we were worlds apart, I don’t think I have ever felt more heard and accepted by someone.
I had been admitted twice to FWB Medical, then to Sacred Heart Hospital for Sepsis. I had left both hospitals against everyone's advice. The sepsis was a direct result of my IV drug use. Upon being convinced to go back, but still unsure if I was going to stay, Karetha was assigned as my nurse. As soon as I saw her I was content to stay. She exuberated positive energy, a twinkle in her eye with a tinge of sadness that showed she had seen it all, she was happy to have the opportunity to help me and hopeful that I was going to stay. Her whole demeanor was that of someone who truly cared. She asked some very thought-provoking questions and then did what most did not. She listened to my answers with an unbiased view, and though it was easy to see that we were worlds apart, I don’t think I have ever felt more heard and accepted by someone. There was truly no judgment in her eyes. She was all business, quick and efficient, and paid attention to every detail while checking my vitals and getting my intake done. She was very experienced and it showed in the best way possible. So despite my urges and desire to leave the hospital again and succumb to the drugs, knowing I could die if not treated, Karetha convinced me to stay; an unimaginable feat in the face of addiction. Her attitude day in and day out is the same; one of excellence.
