August 2026 Honoree
Karina C Ramirez
Karina was nominated by her faculty member during her final semester senior clinical preceptorship. Karina's clinical experience took place in labor and delivery.
Her faculty member shared that Karina demonstrated compassion, caring, and empathy and made a definite connection with the patient before, during, and after her planned cesarean birth. She stayed with the patient and her partner, assisting them throughout this life-changing event.
She provided ongoing education about the patient's care, including an explanation of why the routine postpartum assessments, which can be painful, were necessary to the patient's health. The patient informed Karina that she had been her 'favorite nurse' and helped make her delivery experience the best.
Karina also related that she cared for another client admitted for delivery who was very anxious. Rather than routinely perform all nursing procedures she was authorized to, Karina went to her preceptor and asked the preceptor to place the urinary catheter that was ordered by the provider, since the client was very anxious.
The preceptor agreed that this was a good plan and that it showed good nursing judgment on Karina's part.
