It is our pleasure to nominate Karl in the ICU for The DAISY Award because he has the heart that understands the complexity of both the medical and emotional needs of patients and their families. He also has everything you will envision when you think about what a nurse should be: compassion, attentive, sensitive, kindness, empathy, caring, humility, hard work, dedication, professionalism, respectful and above all passion for what he does which is patient and family care.
In February 2020, our family went through the most difficult month of our lives as we lost our daughter and sister, Mrs. C. Karl took care of our sister/daughter, Mrs. C for at least three of the seven days that she was admitted in the ICU. There are many great and caring nurses at this unit, but Karl is the one that has gone so far above and beyond his call of duty in providing compassionate and excellent care to Mrs. C. Our daughter was very sick, and the doctors had told us she was not doing so well but to remain hopeful. Of course, so many family members were always at the ICU waiting room and sometimes on the hallway and every time Karl came to work, no matter the circumstances, he will always stop and shake hands, give hugs, give words of reassurance and encouragement, comfort us and took the time to listen to us and was never in a rush.
Karl genuinely loves what he does and not only that, he takes the time to know his patients individually and their families. Although our daughter was sedated during most of her stay, he took the time to know her and will always put her teddy bear under her arm at night. He even sang one of her favorite songs ''I am not alone.'' by Jobe and would always write biblical quotes on the whiteboard in her room. He was the most compassionate and caring person we could ever have asked for to care for C. Day in and day out his positive attitude, kindness, and compassion were immeasurable.
It is extremely hard to single out one instance of his compassion but on the day C died, he was on shift and there for her and us in every way possible. There is no way to put in words how hard and tirelessly he took care of C and how much he means to all of us. After the code blue and C's death, Karl asked for a moment to free her off the machine and equipment and when we were all invited back into the room, the room was so clean and organized, our daughter looked very beautiful, at peace and with her teddy bear lying next to her and her rosary chain. He provided us with refreshments during our vigil and constantly checked on us. His remorse and compassion were evident. He is an incredible nurse and incredibly very patient and our go-to person each time we had questions. He will take all the time to listen, especially when we were having a horrible day. He personifies his profession as an ICU nurse.
Karl is now like family to us and he will always have a special place in our hearts. My family is taking this opportunity to salute him for his kindness and compassion and dedication to patient lives. He is an amazing nurse who we truly believe needs to be honored and recognized for all that he does. We strongly believe he deserves to be recognized as one of the best nurses at Memorial.
