Karla consistently takes initiative and goes above and beyond to care for her patients and team.  She recently had a patient contact her for help while in distress.  The patient had been hospitalized for 3 days and during that time did not complete any dialysis treatments.  When the patient came home and tried to treat, the PDC was not working.  Desperate to avoid another hospitalization, after hours, the patient and his wife reached out to Karla.  In compassion for the patient’s plight and dedication to patient care, Karla went to the patient’s home and worked on the patient’s PDC for over an hour until she was able to get it working.  After the PDC started to work she stayed to ensure the patient successfully connected and treated.  She also tended to additional patient care needs and, in total, spent 4 hours working with this patient to ensure that all his needs were met before she left the home.  Karla did all of this on Christmas Day!!

Karla embodies the Davita sentiment that implores teammates to care for every patient as if they were caring for a family member or other loved one. It's a beautiful thing to see her connection with her patients and how she is able to motivate and encourage them through moments of uncertainty.  Karla is very passionate about what she does as a PD Nurse, and affectionately considers what’s in the best interest of her patients at all times.  She is also the “go to” RN for our region for clinical questions.  She has been instrumental in the retention of new teammates as she treats those new to the team with kindness and respect and an outpouring of support, serving as a key role model.  Karla is a true DAISY Nurse.
