Karla's willingness to show leadership, provide my mom with much-needed feedback, and not allow her to dismiss symptoms, gave my mom permission to be honest now and going forward.
When Karla questioned my mom about her level of pain due to bradycardia and related issues for which she had been admitted, my mom said there wasn't pain. It was only due to Karla's willingness to change the way she asked the question that she found out my mom felt constriction and weight on her chest. Karla very clearly, but gently chastising, explained that their notes said my mom was asymptomatic so there wasn't a serious concern. But there were symptoms, and Kayla explained that it was very important that my mother be honest about how and what she was feeling, both with her, and the rest of the care team. From then on, Mom was willing to say her pain was higher than a "2", and really think about what she was experiencing. Mom later told me, "Wow, she gave me a talkin' to, didn't she"! She said it in a voice that showed relief that she wasn't to downplay what she is feeling.

All of Mom's care team has been friendly, thoughtful, kind, and knowledgeable. Karla's willingness to show leadership, provide my mom with much-needed feedback, and not allow her to dismiss symptoms, gave my mom permission to be honest now and going forward. I am deeply grateful. Finally, on her last day in the hospital, Karla proactively worked to get people and paperwork in order so she could be discharged at a reasonable time. That took some herding of cats, and Karla reached out for assistance whenever she could to get it done. Her patient advocacy can not be understated.
