I would like to nominate Karla for the DAISY Award. Working with Karla, I have watched her provide exceptional, compassionate care to her patients and their family members. Most recently on our night shift together, I witnessed Karla go above and beyond her clinical duties. Karla cared for a young patient with dignity and respect, and on the second day, an unfortunate event occurred. The husband had been staying the night and was extremely traumatized, distraught, and overwhelmed over the event. After settling the patient, I witnessed Karla demonstrate extraordinary empathy towards the husband. She spoke to him with genuine kindness and took the time to tell him how proud she was of him for the exceptional care he had provided his wife for the past six years. She also acknowledged the sacrifices he had made and reassured him that it was evident how deeply he loves and cares for his wife. Later, Karla went above and beyond again, going out of her way to purchase breakfast for the patient’s husband because she recognized that he had been by his wife’s side this whole time and had not taken time to care for himself. Karla does her job every day with profound compassion, and that night she not only treated the patient but also treated the patient’s family with dignity and respect. Karla truly exemplifies what it means to be a remarkable nurse and truly deserves this DAISY Award.
