Karlee's attentiveness, quick action, and willingness to look beyond the immediate clinical task exemplify compassionate, patient-centered care.
While preparing a patient for a procedure, Karlee was assessing his NPO status and asked when he had last eaten. The patient replied, "two days ago". Recognizing that this response was concerning, Karlee completed the patient’s preparation and promptly notified the Director of Heart &Vascular. A follow-up conversation with the patient revealed significant food insecurity. He shared that after paying for housing, he could not afford food and also lacked the financial means to purchase gas to travel to food banks. Understanding the urgency of the situation, 211 was contacted to explore available outreach programs.
Through this effort, the patient was connected with the FARM Program, sponsored by Trinity Health. The program arranged for the delivery of fresh and sustainable food directly to the patient and enrolled him for ongoing support to ensure continued access to nutritious meals.
