I was working with Karyn placing PICC's one day. This patient that was admitted for poor management of his DM, led to having debridement of a nonhealing ulcer on his toe and possible amputation. During the procedure we have the opportunity to get to know the patients better. The patient told us that he was a veteran. Further on into the procedure the patient said his condition had worsened because he could not afford the insulin that he had been spending $1300 a month for because he had no insurance. Upon further discussion, as to the why's....you were a veteran....he was saying he did not qualify....and he was discharged from the Marines in good standing. Karyn went out of her way to get in touch with the Assemblyman that covered his area in Northern NY. Inquiring led to a different politician that could help him obtain insurance. Karyn had everything printed out for the patient and hand delivered it to him a few days later. I believe that this act of kindness is representing Karyn's personality and was extraordinary for the patient.
