In late January, my 89 year old dad was admitted to Greene County Medical Center after suffering a severe stroke that affected his speech and ability to swallow, his mobility, and his ability to control his emotions. Needless to say, he was very challenging to care for, especially when he would become agitated. As a long-time nurse having to shift to the daughter role, it was very difficult to see my dad facing his worst nightmare, a stroke which left him with very little control over his life. Outbursts were unpredictable and did not reflect his typical behaviors, which was challenging to face among my peers, fearful that their impression of Dad would not recognize the hard-working farmer who loved a good laugh, and enjoyed his family.
While each and every nurse who cared for Dad delivered compassionate and high-quality care obviously directed toward the needs of a stroke patient, one night nurse consistently demonstrated patience, kindness, and the ability to care for not only Dad, but also his family. During his first night, Dad became extremely agitated and difficult to assure his safety, including the risk of another stroke. Utilizing her critical thinking skills and concern for his well-being, this "Angel Nurse" obtained a sedative for him and contacted us to inform us of Dad's condition. Upon our arrival and until Dad became more settled, this nurse took the time to sit with us at the bedside and provide some much-needed support and reassurance during some of our most worrisome hours. She continued to do so throughout the end of her shift, and whenever she was on-duty during his hospitalization, she would offer hugs and words of encouragement when we needed them the most.
Although Dad passed away a few weeks later, this wonderful nurse continues to remain in our hearts for everything she did for all of us. In fact, after I shared with Dad that his night nurse was part of a family he'd known for years that hailed from Carroll County, he told me about her each time I visited.
