I think I got a glimpse of who Kate Black was one Sunday shortly after starting at Shepherd. They were looking for a shower chair. The patient had just told them she hadn’t had a shower since arriving at Shepherd several days ago. Our patients often have not showered since the event that landed them in the hospital, meaning they usually have their first shower post-injury at rehab. It marks the beginning of their journey to regain the autonomy they lost, to reclaim the dignity that was sacrificed for the sake of prioritizing their acute medical needs. Kate knew this. They knew what a shower represents, but also knew what it was - a basic human need that her patient had been denied for far too long. So, Kate set out to find a shower chair. They were going to shower the patient themselves, and I offered to help. This was the first time I watched Kate interact with one of their patients. They actively listened to their patient, allowing them to express their concerns while providing validation and encouragement. They effortlessly used humor and wit to make the situation lighter while skillfully maintaining a safe and professional environment for her patient. After about a year of working with Kate, I can say without any reservations that Kate is a stellar human. They are a rolling bundle of fun and infectious laughter and love and light. They simultaneously exude compassion and positivity while skillfully maintaining safety and professionalism. Kate is not only a stellar person but also an exceptional nurse. You want them in your corner. Their experience and knowledge, coupled with their sharp instincts and resourcefulness, have helped provide critical care for our patients countless times. I’m truly thankful for the honor of working with such a wonderful person, friend, nurse, and human.
