I work with Kate in passing as I am a member of the palliative medicine team, so we are sometimes covering mutual patients. In my capacity as a palliative medicine clinician, I always appreciated the valuable insight Kate provided for the patients with a palliative medicine consult. Even in brief interactions, you can clearly feel the care and empathy Kate has for any patient she is assigned to work with. It was not until I was admitted to UMMC myself that I got to know Kate more as she was my nurse for two days while I was on 13w. Whenever I had a question or concern, Kate was there to update me to the best of her ability. In situations where she needed more guidance from the medical team, she ensured seamless communication and updates regarding my care, lab work, imaging, etc. In Kate’s interactions with myself and my mother who flew in from out of town, there is a definite passion for excellence in patient care and building trusting relationships- something I have seen previously with patients other than myself. Although I work with many great nurses at UMMC, having Kate as my nurse when I was ill made it exceedingly clear that she is a DAISY Nurse.
