I just felt the need to commend the unbelievable service my husband has received from Nurse Kate Langevin. On our first visit to the department, we had a very pleasant meeting with Kate and another nurse. Kate then proceeded to insert a catheter into my husband and as she did, she explained everything. Kate then proceeded to give me literature and spent time with me to explain certain things. This may be normal for your department, so I have to explain why I was so impressed.
My husband was being treated by another group. They sent us home with a catheter in place and a leg bag with absolutely no instructions except for the fact that I could change the bags, no precautions, etc. I did not receive a single piece of paper or any directions. When we returned, it was so very impersonal, and I felt like we were just another number to them. The entire experience was horrible. I could list many negative things we experienced so I had all of our records transferred to the VA. I am so very happy I did.
Our interaction with Kate continued when she inserted another catheter because the original one was ripped out after the bag caught on something. She took two urine samples. The other urology group never took a sample even though they prescribed antibiotics twice. Within an hour, she called. The NP had prescribed antibiotics because of the results.
Amazing contact with the patient, compassion, explanations, smiles, and results! It is obvious that Kate cares for her patients when faced with adverse conditions, we all need that kind of support. I cannot tell you how very impressed I am with your department. I have always praised the VA because all of our interactions have been wonderful.
