I am recognizing Kate Smith because of the extraordinary care and compassion she showed me during one of the scariest moments of my life. I was admitted to the hospital because I was going septic, and during that time, it was discovered that I was also severely anemic and would need a blood transfusion.

During the transfusion, I began having a severe allergic reaction and went into anaphylaxis. Everything happened so fast, and I was terrified. Out of fear and confusion, I began to refuse further treatment because I didn't fully understand how serious my condition had become. Kate stayed extremely calm, patient, and kind - she took the time to explain what was happening and reassured me that I was safe in her care. Because of her compassion and confidence, I was able to trust her and accept the treatment I needed.

She acted quickly and effectively while keeping me calm during the entire crisis. Even after I was transferred to the ICU, she continued to check on me to make sure I was doing okay both physically and emotionally. Her genuine care, empathy, and professionalism turned one of the most frightening experiences of my life into one where I felt truly supported and cared for.

Kate is the perfect example of what nursing is all about - compassion, skill, and heart. I will never forget what she did for me.
