Kate's calm demeanor and empathy during a difficult time were appreciated more than you know.
It wasn't just the day we lost our beloved father and grandfather, it was also the day my mom had the privilege to meet Kate. This was during COVID-19, and healthcare workers did their best to take precautions to protect themselves. Kate looked at my mom and asked "Is it okay if I give you a hug?" While hugging patients and family members was probably frowned upon given the pandemic, it was exactly what my mom needed. I can never thank her enough for the compassion and empathy she showed my mom that night.

While the outcome wasn't what we had hoped for, I would be remiss if I didn't share that our experience was a positive one due to one particular nurse. Kate was my father's nurse. She was very kind and helpful. She took the time to answer all of my questions about medications, tests, etc. Kate was very patient and although the emergency department is a very busy place, she never made us feel that we were slowing her down or taking too much time.

When his condition declined and it was evident that there was nothing more to be done, she calmly took charge and instructed me what would be coming next. She then brought me tissues, closed the door assuring me that she was just outside the door if I needed anything, and then allowed me to have some much-needed and treasured private moments with him before he passed.

Kate's calm demeanor and empathy during a difficult time were appreciated more than you know. She embodies the true sense of what a nurse should be. While this day was probably just a normal day at work for her; it was not for me. I am forever grateful for the care she provided and the compassion she showed to my father and me during his last moments.
