When I think about what truly exceptional nursing care looks like, I think of Kate Sensi. I had the privilege of being under Kate’s care while recovering from surgery – one of the most vulnerable and difficult times in my life. From the very beginning, she went far beyond what I expected from a nurse. She didn’t just treat my condition; she cared for me as a whole person.

Managing pain after surgery can be overwhelming, but Kate was incredibly attentive and determined to make sure I was as comfortable as possible. She listened closely, responded quickly, and never made me feel like just another patient. When I felt discouraged, overwhelmed, or found myself in tears, she didn’t just offer medical care- she offered compassion. She sat with me, reassured me, and helped lift my spirit in ways that truly mattered.

Kate also made sure that nothing fell through the cracks. She personally ensured I got to and from my dialysis treatments safely, and when I missed ordering a meal, she made sure I still had something good to eat. Those moments may seem small, but during a hospital stay, they make a world of difference.

What stood out the most was how deeply she connected with me. When I shared my love for dogs, she brightened my days by telling me stories about her dog, Beau. On my last day, she left me with a hand-drawn picture of Beau - a simple but incredibly meaningful gesture that I now keep taped to my dialysis machine at home. It reminds me every day of the kindness and care she showed me.
