I always felt like she treated me as if I were someone in her family or friend group rather than a stranger, which she certainly didn’t have to, but it aided in my particular experience as it helped me feel more at ease than feel as if I were being judged or as if I were just another number.
From the time I walked into the ED until I left, Katee made me feel like I wasn’t judged or stupid for coming in. Sometimes, having an autoimmune disorder, you can get some nursing staff that don’t take the pain or issues as serious as it may be… or you may feel stigmatized… but Katee expressed nothing but compassion and precision on my pain and symptoms.

She communicated clearly the medications I was receiving and how long I might have to wait for results. When I needed a second urine sample for more testing, she was compassionate in telling me and expressed empathy in how I might not be able to do that right away, since I had just given one and had been pretty dehydrated - she never made me feel like I was bothering her for requesting it.

During my high pain level, she listened to me and helped distract me from the pain by making small talk with me while she put my IV in. She made sure that after the results were in, all of my questions were answered, and even while discharging me, she went and found the doctor for a particular follow-up question I had to one of my test results, when she could have easily just told me to call my PCP tomorrow morning.

I always felt like she treated me as if I were someone in her family or friend group rather than a stranger, which she certainly didn’t have to, but it aided in my particular experience as it helped me feel more at ease than feel as if I were being judged or as if I were just another number.

I had never been to Deaconess Gibson Hospital (except to do bloodwork one time, but I had never been to the ED before), and my experience with Katee, Dr. Hanson, and Greta, the X-ray tech, solidified my trust in the hospital. I was scared because I was unfamiliar with the area and what to expect, but this experience really set the bar above and beyond any expectations for the future.

I hope and pray that anyone else’s experience is as great as mine was with the same care and compassion that Katee and her team showed me. It sets them apart from other experiences I have had with my hospital experiences.
