I was admitted after I felt disoriented and went to the emergency room where I was diagnosed with an unusually high ammonia levels. I have been diagnosed with non-specific cirrhosis of the liver (I do not consume alcohol) and diabetes (type 2) by my doctors. I was admitted that night.
On Sunday night, early in the morning (about 2:00 a.m.), I awoke with a massive headache and restless leg syndrome. I was unable to go back to sleep due to extreme discomfort. I called for a nurse and Katie responded quickly. After telling her what discomfort I had, she advised me she could give me Tylenol. I cannot use that medication since it was part of the reason I developed cirrhosis. She could not reach the doctor in charge and therefore could not give me any other medication.
Katie saw how much I was suffering and asked if walking would help. Katie then held me by my arm to keep me steady and walked all over the hospital floor and even asked if I could climb stairs. She stood by me as I did. Returning to my room she inquired about the level of discomfort and the headache was tolerable, and my RLS was almost gone. She asked me if I would rather sit in the reclining chair or bed, and I chose the chair. She then went and got me a warm blanket and any pain I had was gone. With that being done she asked me if she could do anything else. Jokingly I said I would like strawberry ice cream if it wasn't high in sugar. She returned within 5 minutes with the ice cream. I was completely taken aback and grateful to have experienced such a wonderful person/nurse.
The OSU Med Center should be proud to have such a wonderful nurse who goes out of her way to bring comfort to a patient. I will never forget this experience.
