Katie restored my faith within five minutes.
I have been a frequent flyer in and out of multiple hospitals over the past year dealing with a condition that was a mystery to a team of six specialists. Upon landing in the ER yet again, I was transferred and admitted to UTMB where I stayed for the week. I arrived late at night so my evening nurse Katie came in and introduced herself saying she was going to read my chart and return. So far my expectations for the standard of healthcare was extremely low based on my past year experience being shuffled from one doctor to another and one hospital to another with no one truly caring about my case. Katie restored my faith within five minutes. She did return as she said and made sure I was settled in for the night. The next morning she returned with a welcoming smile saying she wanted to make sure I had everything I needed before the shift change. She even stayed late to make sure maintenance was notified my phone needed to be fixed so I could order food service. For the rest of my stay she treated me like I was her only patient. She went well above and beyond what her position required her to. She was very empathetic to my frustration of not being able to get answers or treatment for my symptoms. I have been in the medical field over 30 years and her level of knowledge of medicine was extremely impressive for a woman of her young age and experience. Above everything, her bed side manner was not something you can teach in nursing school. It is something you are born with, accompanied by the values and beliefs you are raised with. If Katie were my daughter, I could not be more proud! I would love to see her win this award and recognition to let her know the impact she makes on patients and to give her encouragement and motivation to continue to pursue all her career dreams. Saying thank you just didn’t seem to be enough!
